NOTE: I took this post from my friend over at CorvetteNewsBlog.com I asked his permission because I thought the information presented was pretty good for any car owner to know.

Corvette C6 Z06 Engine Catches Fire as Result of Battery Charger

Multiple Engine Fires Have Been Linked to Improper Battery Charging or Use of Bargain Battery Chargers in Recent Months

The images are gruesome for any automotive enthusiast: a show quality C6 Z06 Corvette with the engine bay engulfed in flames, the body panels of a Porsche 911 melting under the heat of a battery fire, people’s automobiles destroyed in their driveways and garages. Recently the internet has been buzzing with people reporting battery fires causing costly damage to their car or home. The issue was so large that CTEK, one of the world’s leading battery charger manufacturers, felt the need to warn motorists of the dangers of using a battery charger that lacked what they call “smart functionality”.

C6 Z06 Battery Catches Fire as Result of Faulty Battery Charger

Older or lower cost automotive battery chargers, the sort that many people have purchased from places like Wal-Mart and EBay, have begun to be clearly a dangerous investment. Battery chargers are meant to help maintain the life of a vehicle’s battery, but, those lacking “smart functionality” will continue pumping voltage in to the battery after it has reached maximum charge. This can result in shorts to the vehicle’s electrical systems, battery overheating, complete destruction of the battery’s ability to hold a charge, and in a few extreme cases recently reported even a battery fire.

One easy way to avoid this sort of damage is to invest in a smart battery charger. CTEK has become the world’s leading producer of these, although companies such as GENIUS have begun manufacturing comparable smart chargers as well. A “smart” charger functions in much the same way as a classic or standard battery charger, but with one large change: smart chargers are able to sense the level of charge that a battery has and, once it reaches full charge, they shut off the flow of voltage in to the battery. These smart chargers then go in to what is referred to as “trickle charging” mode, wherein they allow the battery to self drain down to 90 or 95% capacity before giving it another surge. This keeps the battery at full or near full charge without risk of ever overcharging it, and as result, the dangers that are associated with overcharging. Trickle charging works to keep the vehicle safe, and also to extend the life of the battery well beyond standard expectations.

If you’re still concerned with directly connecting to the battery as well, another solution exists—specifically for Corvette vehicles. Companies like SouthernCarParts.com sell both the CTEK and GENIUS battery chargers, as well as aviation style push-pull adapters for Corvettes. These push-pull Corvette charger adapters, deemed StealthLink, utilize smart charger connections and communicate the same information that the smart charger would see, but they go a step further. The StealthLink push-pull adapter uses a single pin plug—similar to a standard television cable wire—that connects the battery charger to the vehicle through a different port. This provides a buffer point between the voltage of the charger and the battery itself. Another benefit of these StealthLink aviation style charger adapters is the ease of use. Once installed, plugging the battery charger in no longer requires opening the hood or trunk to access the battery. This helps prevent sparking in the engine bay, where fires can easily be started.

For this reason, airplane manufacturers have been utilizing this form of battery maintenance connection point long before smart chargers were even available. The chargers themselves still function perfectly well, and should be invested in and used whenever possible, but now they have an easier and safer connection point than directly to the battery’s terminal points.

Jan-ulf Soderberg, the Head of Brand at CTEK said in his safety release, of the use of smart chargers, “With proper battery maintenance and care, motorists can ensure that their vehicles start first time as well as extending the lives of their batteries quite dramatically. CTEK smart chargers are particularly useful for cars that are used infrequently or left standing for long periods of time (i.e. over the winter), although everyday maintenance is advisable.”

It’s a shame to see beautiful vehicles destroyed by owners actively trying to take care of and maintain their vehicles. For this reason, CTEK and other companies have begun attempts to raise awareness of the dangers of bargain battery chargers, and applications such as the Corvette StealthLink have been developed. Use of these forms of battery charging is especially important for vehicles that are not driven every day. Cars which are stored, or which sit in garages for multiple weeks between drives, require smart charging to keep their vehicle functional and to extend the life of their automobile’s electrical components, as well as for the safety of them and their property.

Dodge Has Unveiled a Sportier V6 Challenger Rallye Redline for 2012

Matching their competitors performance package V6 offerings, Dodge is bringing a Rallye Redline Performance V6 to showrooms in 2012

Responding to calls that a Challenger without a Hemi was a pedestrian offering, Dodge has stepped up the performance on their impressive LSX Challenger model line for 2012 with the offering a Challenger Rallye Redline performance package. This new package will bring improved performance, handling, and sportier looks to the V6 Challenger for 2012 and help the LSX Challenger compete more directly with performance V6 offering from Ford and Chevrolet.

Sticking with the basic set-up of the Challenger SXT Plus, the Rallye Redline package is designed to take the same V6 3.6L Pentastar engine and 5-speed automatic transmission and add performance enhancements to it that set it apart from the rest of the V6 Challenger pack. These advancements in technology begin with a factory designed and mounted cold air intake and new performance exhaust which should help with air flow in to engine and provide a bump to 305 HP and 268 pounds of torque at peak RPMs. These numbers surpass the performance numbers on all other Pentastar equipped vehicles. This new power is attained through the shift pattern with help of a newly tuned transmission which offers a final drive ratio of 2.65:1 that helps realize quicker acceleration and increased fuel efficiency. Realizing also that raw power numbers alone weren't enough, Dodge also set to improving handling for the Rallye Redline Challenger as well.

These handling gains are provided to the vehicle through the installation of the Super Sport Group suspension package. This package features stiffer and higher rate sway bars and a firmer suspension set-up on front and back that result in a snappier steering. This extra power and suspension performance in reigned in on the back end by the addition of increased brake performance--the front is equipped with larger diameter rotors for extra brake grip, and the rear now features vented brake rotors for improved heat dispersion under high stress braking conditions. In conjunction with the new, larger wheels--the previously utilizes 18 x 7.5 inch wheels have been replaced with RT inspired 20 x 8 inch models--the new Challenger V6 Rallye Redline provides extra performance and the grip, braking, and handling that will inspire greater confidence in the driver wielding their Challenger's extra ponies.

Visually, the Rallye Redline Challenger also features some aggressive, race inspired styling. The new suspension provides a slightly lowered center of gravity, and the red accent striping on black is the sort of color combination certain to strike fear in many an opposing racer's hearts. These visual pieces come together to make the Rallye Redline the sort of vehicle that looks immediately at home on either a track or showroom floor.

As with other Challengers, the Rallye Redline V6 still maintains an air of class and dignity to the driver sitting inside. The same luxury touches that are standard on the Challenger SXT Plus can be seen here as well: leather seats with front seat heaters, Dodge's proprietary UConnect phone and iPod connectivity, a 276-watt Boston Acoustics stereo system, and an automatic climate control system. All of these components come together to take the price of the Rallye Redline Challenger up $1750 over the sticker on the Challenger SXT Plus and place it a final MSRP cost of $29,670 when it goes on sale this April.

This cost however places the Challenger in an almost identical price range as its Hemi V8 powered RT big brother, which brings the car-buyer left with this difficult question: do they spend nearly $30,000 on a performance package and fully loaded V6, or toss down an extra $1250 to purchase the 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft torque R/T model, albeit one with fewer amenities. The final decision comes down to value of luxury versus performance for the buyer, and places the Rallye Redline V6 Challenger in an awkward place.

2011 Challenger Run Away Favorite

The Challenger took home top prize in the Cars.Com annual shopper's favorite award.

Every year, the popular Cars.com website compiles information from all of their browsers to gauge interest in vehicles based on number of vehicles searches, number of dealership inquiries sent, and most importantly the reviews filled out by the website's users. With millions of "votes" ultimately tallied, Cars.com came up with a list of finalists and posted them to their Facebook website where their fans could then place final votes on the winner. In what should be no surprise to us Challenger owners and lovers, the Dodge muscle car took down the top honors. It ultimately bested a fairly impressive list of 10 vehicles comprised of:

Audi Q5

Dodge Challenger

GMC Terrain

Honda Accord

Honda Pilot

Kia Soul

Ram 1500

Subaru Outback

Toyota Highlander

Toyota Sienna

Noticeably absent from this finalists list is any other definable sports car. I guess that means then that the Challenger, in terms of an American muscle or sports car, has the most cross-market interest.

What do you think? This award one worth bragging about? The Cars.com Shoppers’ Choice system seems a little flawed, but, I definitely can't complain about the result, as I know it's my favorite car and my choice as a shopper as well.

Video: Borla ATAK Exhaust Installed on 2012 Dodge Challenger RT

Great video of the popular Borla ATAK exhaust installed on a 2012 Dodge Challenger RT hits YouTube.

Getting a quality sound bite of an exhaust is always tricky. If the exhaust manufacturer doesn't make one themselves, trolling through YouTube for an appropriate quality one can be a tiresome effort. So many people use handycams with inferior microphones, or, worse--cell phone cameras--to capture their exhaust once they've installed it and up until now there hadn't been a solid video or sound clip of the Borla ATAK installed on the Challenger RT. Thankfully, the guys at Southern Car Parts did one and posted it up, and the thing sounds great. It's right in line with the tone of the exhaust in person--only, it sounds better in person.

For those who don't know, the Challenger RT Borla ATAK exhaust is the new premiere exhaust from Borla. Manufactured using their patented Acoustic Tuned Applied Kinetic technology, the ATAK Exhaust system is specifically tuned to complement the exhaust notes of the Challenger engine. This results in a powerful and aggressive exhaust tone, reminiscent of professional race cars on autocross and FIAA tracks, that crescendos up through the entire RPM band to a powerful and aggressive scream.

Don't believe me? Here's a great video for you. It has both the deep growl you'd expect from the Dodge 5.7L HEMI engine beneath the hood, as well as a true race-inspired exhaust tone that no other system can match.

At Detroit Auto Show Dodge Declares the Challenger's Run Soon Over

Dodge has plans in place to end the Challenger's production run in 2014 and replace their pony car with a smaller, more CAFE friendly Barracuda.

If Dodge has one thing at their disposal it's a cadre of legendary Chrysler nameplates at their disposal, and the name Baracuda is just another one of them. The Dodge Challenger, while beautiful and impressive (and very able to hold its own, performance-wise, especially in SRT8 form) is heavy. Very heavy, in fact, and that weight has hurt the Challenger's sales as well as its market image.

This weight issue has made the current Challenger an uncommon sight at track days around the nation where its closest competitors--the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro--can be found in droves, and it's this weight issue that will ultimately lead to the Challenger's demise.

CAFE restrictions have become rough, and Dodge as a brand is having trouble keeping its numbers where they need to be in relation to CAFE averages and standards. The weighty Challenger, and its weighty brother the Charger, don't help with this either. For this reason, the move to a lighter--and, as result, more fuel friendly--alternative seemed like a given.

Thus enters the Dodge Barracuda. Thus far, little is known about the Barracuda. What Dodge has said is that the vehicle will not be built on the Challenger's LY Platform, and, according to rumors will be constructed on the same rear-wheel drive platform as the Hyundai Genesis coupe. This platform, whether it or another one is used, will guaranteed be shorter, thinner, and much lighter than the Challenger LY one.

These moves should ultimately take the Challenger, through means of downsizing, from a Grand-Touring Coupe as it is currently built to a more legitimate, light-weight and high-performing sports car--the likes of which, outside of the Viper, Dodge hasn't produced in decades. Also, this move makes sense in conjunction with the Alfa Romeo co-ownership of Dodge now, as either purchasing the rights to the Genesis platform or producing an entirely new one would provide Alfa Romeo with an affordable, lightweight, RWD platform that could be utilized for a more entry-level sports vehicle in their very successful European market--maybe something to battle with the BMW 1M and other vehicles of that nature?

Ultimately, Dodge has this new Barracuda slated for release in the 2014 model year--which means that we should begin seeing concept versions of it in the upcoming months. This 2014 date would mean that the entire life-span of the Challenger, launched in this iteration in 2008, would be just over five years. The 2014 date also puts the Barracuda in line to compete with the revamped 50th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang set for release that same year, and the next generation Chevrolet Camaro that's scheduled for release in the 2015 model year.

Retro USA Chrome Challenger Trim

An in-depth look at a gorgeous and exciting new product--Chrome body trim--for the Dodge Challenger

Dodge Challenger owners like you and I are adamant about getting the very best for their vehicle--it's the reason we bought Challengers in the first place, after all. We're also almost assuredly fans of good style--again, we drive the Challenger for a reason. These two aspects seemed to come together with this new product, which I was able to see at SEMA this year for the first time and which I have since purchased for myself. It's a complete Chrome Bumper and trim kit for the Dodge Challenger by Retro USA, and it's gorgeous. I like it so much, and am so happy with the look of it on my Redline Challenger, that I had to share it.

These products are made from incredible materials that provide all of the benefits of classic Chrome, visually, but do so in a light-weight and more affordable way. Each piece is crafted from TPO Acetyl Polymer, which is a form of automotive plastic that well exceeds the quality of the industry standard, and has a thin film of Chrome applied to the top. The Chrome film applied to the TPO is actually made from the same material that classic Chrome pieces are, just in a thin film form. What this means is that the shine and look with never rust, tarnish, or fade in UV light, and is strong enough to easily repel road junk and avoid chipping or cracking. The bumpers are crafted with thermoformed insets as well, which allow for them to sit just off of the body--like the classic Chrome bumpers of the 60's and 70's--and have a more authentic look.

And looks, that's what's really important here. The Challenger has become incredibly popular because of its fusion of classic and modern in its design. The new Challengers utilize a stylistic design that takes the best lines and styles of the classic automotive work of art that was the 1970-74 first generation Challenger and combines them with modern technology and design sensibilities to create something that is equal parts iconic and futuristic, classic and exciting. These chrome pieces from Retro USA are the perfect addition to this look and feel, too, as they do just that.

Chrome bumpers, bumper protrusions, headlight fascia liners, and other trim pieces were all available options for the Challenger between the years of '70 and '74, and the Rallye Challenger famously sported them all with class and style. Sadly, Dodge hasn't continued offering these Chrome touches today, and that's where Retro USA steps in. These bumper pieces are gorgeous and designed to fit the body and curve of the modern Challenger while mimicking the classic look of its first generation ancestor. Each piece has its place and fits perfectly on the vehicle--attaching with 3M automotive tape for an easy installation. They're definitely beautiful and exciting modification pieces.

The technology behind them, which I touched upon earlier, is also undeniably impressive. So much so that the praise lauded upon this new product line at 2011 SEMA was just the beginning. The Retro USA product line also became an Automotive Innovation Award Winner. The award cited Retro USA’s Chrome-Tech products as “having excellent impact resistance and gravelometer performance, fully recyclable, and offering a lustrous chromed surface while eliminating hexavalent chromium chemicals. The result is a lighter, less costlybumper cover that is more environmentally benign.” This means, ultimately, that these products are not just beautiful, but also high-tech and much more Green than their alternatives which exist on the market today.

In all, I'm extremely impressed with my complete Challenger kit. I ordered mine from Southern Car Parts, who I tend to always deal with, and received it in a quick and timely manner. In all, for the price and what you get, I give these products--and the complete kit in particular--an A+ grade.

2012 Dodge Challenger Yellow Jacket

Dodge Brings Back the Yellow Jacket Moniker for a 2012 Performance Focused Special Edition 392 Challenger

In the late 1960's a new modification and performance movement began at Dodge, and over the next few years the company would roll out a succession of beautiful and powerful race inspired special editions of their automobiles. The Super Bee, The Coronet RT, and the Dart GTS were all released during this few year span, and each captured the hearts and wallets of more than a few automotive enthusiasts. There was, however, one Dodge special edition that stood out from the rest: the Challenger Yellow Jacket.

The original 1970's Challenger Yellow Jacket, which was built on the Challenger Convertible E-Body platform, was a targa top special show car that captured media attention immediately. While the Yellow Jacket itself never saw a true production run, it's popularity and influence in the automotive show circuit lead to a number of its features becoming utilized on the production Challenger--in '71 the Yellow Jacket Front Grille was introduced, and from '72 to '74 the rear panels and rear quarter panels were changed to reflect the Yellow Jacket styling. That was it, though. The Yellow Jacket never hit production and became a fabled vehicle.

The 1970 Dodge Challenger Yellow Jacket Concept was both beautiful and exciting.

Well, it's no longer a dream to own a Yellow Jacket. With the rising popularity of the new 392 SRT-8 Challenger, Dodge has decided to revitalize the special edition Yellow Jacket moniker and modeled a new version of it's SRT Challenger on the classic Yellow Jacket cues, in both style and performance.

The new Yellow Jacket is only available in the new, and gorgeous, attention grabbing yellow coloring with black striping. The looks is distinctively aggressive, and highlights the track and performance focus of the vehicle itself. The wheels are specially made, 20x9" five-spoke aluminum designs, which also feature black window accents, for a fantastic integration between wheel style and body--something that not enough automotive manufacturers take in to consideration when building special edition models. For me, these custom wheels are the true highlight of the exterior changes. The Yellow Jacket also receives a modified front grille that's close to the standard one in style, but a little more aggressive with wider spaced diamond pattern. The rear fascia panel also has a few interesting highlight touches to separate it from the standard SRT8 Challenger. The look is finished off with Yellow Jacket specific branding, including gorgeous integration of the Yellow Jacket name in to the vinyl side striping.

The SRT8 392 Dodge Challenger Yellow Jacket updates the classic Yellow Jacket with modern styling, class and power.

The interior didn't go untouched, either. The seats are a special edition black leather with yellow stitching and trim to match the exterior. The rest of the cabin is highlighted with small, and tastefully designed, yellow and silver touches as well. These changes are subtle, but, stylish and tasteful, and really help set this special edition Challenger apart from the inside as well as the outside.

The seats for the 2012 Dodge Challenger are subtle and gorgeous, with special silver stitching and yellow Yellow Jacket accents.

Of course, this car's not just about looks, either. The performance of the 392 SRT8 is undeniable. The 470HP/470Torque 6.4L Hemi V8 engine is a monster of a machine that is able to propel the Challenger from 0-to-60 in the 4 second range, and run the quarter mile sub-13 seconds. The Yellow Jacket also features front and rear performance Brembo big brakes, upgraded in size to match the new wheels, that help reign in all of that muscle. The Yellow Jacket will also handle better than previous iterations of the Challenger thanks to a new adaptive suspension system, which features both a standard driving and performance sport mode, and will allow the vehicle to maintain grip at up to .90g on the skid pad. All of is necessary on a car with the size and power of the Challenger SRT8 392, and its full 182mph top-speed capabilities (when outfitted with the 6-speed transmission).

The 470HP 392 V8 Hemi Engine in the SRT8 Challenger Yellow Jacket is an absolute work of art.

The Yellow Jacket is just now going on sale, but you'll have to act fast to pick one up, as there are just 1000 being made--a number of which have already been claimed. We should start seeing this beautiful special edition Challenger hitting showroom floors, and subsequently vast stretches of pavement near you, early next year.

Just came across a very cool product that I wanted to share, Caliper Covers for the Challenger

Made from aircraft grade aluminum (not sure what classifies something as being aircraft grade, but, it sounds fancy) these MGP caliper covers look great and apparently are very functional. When I first saw the product listing, I didn't believe in the claims of functionality. They're caliper covers, and I just always assumed that caliper covers were purely a cosmetic upgrade.

However, the heat reductive properties of Aluminum, as well as the heat channels formed by the placement of the caliper cover, actually result in lower brake surface temperatures (of 20-50 degrees! a huge jump). Lower temperatures means lessened brake fade and increased performance and explains, ultimately, why even the most expensive big brake kits utilize similar covers.

Of course, the actual benefits don't stop there, either. Caliper covers are great for shielding brake dust and keeping that annoying stuff off of my alloy wheels. That helps to keep the wheels looking great-- a plus considering that caliper covers highlight the wheels even further.

Of course, some people go for the same look by painting their calipers. This is definitely an option, but, one that will cost an equivalent amount to caliper covers, and be less removable if you wanted to return the brakes to stock down the road. Also, painted calipers wont offer the same brake heat dispersion or dust blocking benefits of covers. I used to paint the calipers on my older vehicles, but, with these aluminum covers now being available, I can't ever see myself going that direction again.

Ultimately, these are affordable, effective, and great looking modification pieces. I was really happy to get them and, even though the install took a little longer than advertised, was happy to install them. Coupling them with my DBA rotors, and Hawk HPP+ pads, I'm pretty certain my brakes are performing at a level comparable to a $6000 big brake kit for just a fraction of the price.

Challenger lovers almost certainly remember the 1971 film 'Vanishing Point' and its iconic white 1970 Dodge Challenger. That Challenger, driven by the character Kowalski, was the real star of the film--which focused more on the car driving than on the character aspects of the story, not that I'm complaining.

Well, that Challenger is classic and iconic, and it's that sense that Mopar seemingly has looked to capture in their new Kowalski Edition 392 Challenger. Convinced by a fan of both the Challenger and 'Vanishing Point', Mopar recently did a very special and limited run of 10, unique, Bright White 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Inaugural Editions. In addition to the gorgeous Bright White paint job, these unique Kowalski Challengers will also be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, stripe delete, Dark Slate SRT seats, 20-inch aluminum SRT wheels, and more. In addition, and to harken back more to the 'Vanishing Point' Challenger, each Kowalski edition will have a custom, unique, pistol grip shifter handle just like the one seen in the vehicle.

Other unique touches, in addition to the iconic pistol grip shifter, include unique new chrome exhaust tips, a distinctive Kowalski rear spoiler, special dash and window plaque pieces, a reproduction of the Colorado plate seen on the movie car, and a unique fender tag and broadcast sheet.

Of course, if you're looking to own one of these unique Kowalski Challengers, you're sadly out of luck. All 10 were sold almost immediately--an impressive feat considering that neither Dodge nor Mopar publicly advertised or displayed this custom build at any car shows. That the vehicle sold that quickly on word-of-mouth alone is a testament both to the Challenger's popularity as well as the appreciation and cult-following that still exists for 'Vanishing Point'. So, if you want to purchase your own Kowalski Edition 392, you'll have to wait until one of these 10 unique rides hits the market--and then, probably, pay a pretty penny for it.

Now, I want to say that I'm not trying to hype up 'Vanishing Point' as all that great of a film. I enjoy it, and it's fun and exploitative in nature, but little more than a B-grade film. This special edition Challenger, however? This gets a very definite A from me--or, two thumbs up and a right foot down, if you prefer.

Some of my Pony car blogging counter-parts have been talking about this Camaro News Blog Article today, and it's an interesting one. I actually tend to agree with the majority of them in being saddened by the idea that the Manual transmission is on its last leg of life, especially with the knowledge that it has now infected the muscle-car market and with the higher EPA/Fuel efficiency standards being put in place by our regulatory government, but don't think it is as imminent as they do. It seems to me like, yes, eventually the manual transmission will fall by the way-side, but like that date is certainly many decades off. I agree, there's nothing like the feel and the control that a manual transmission offers, also, but I wonder: if the newer automatics, with their newer technology, can actually provide better performance, why not embrace them? My Challenger is manual, and I love it, but I'd still love the vehicle and love driving it if it were an Automatic instead. Is this a big deal? Does it seem like, in our lifetimes, we'll see the last, true, manual transmission?

Here's the CNB article. It's a decently written quick read and worth the time investment. Let me know what you think in the comments section.

In 1964 Bob Dylan famously sang, "The times, they are a changin". Now, I don't think he was talking about cars at that point in time, but, the song seems terribly applicable when looking at the transmission shift being seen in the American vehicle market today, a shift that was made all the more apparent by the admission of Chevrolet executives that they expect more than half of the new 2012 Camaro ZL1s they sell to be purchased in the two-pedal, automatic, form. What?!

That's right: Chevrolet is producing a 580 HP, MRC Suspension, monster of a Pony Car, and they expect more people to want to buy it in Automatic than Manual. To me, this is insanity. I come from the generation of drivers who worship the clutch pedal for all of its power and potential, and who can't imagine driving a sport vehicle without one, but it seems that my generation of driver is becoming an anomaly. The current most-powerful Camaro, Chevrolet's Camaro SS of over 400HP, sells over 70% of its vehicles in Automatic, and there's reason for this.

Can you imagine driving this 580HP beast with only two pedals? Is the move from Manual to Automatic, even in the performance vehicle market of today, ultimately a good one?

Once upon a time, the only reason to go to Automatic was for the ease of it. A talented drive could shift with much less delay than automatic transmission had, and had control over their RPMs when shifting. Beyond those numbers, larger numbers of gears and more race-friendly gear ratios meant that manual vehicles were built, quiet simply, to outperform their two-pedal counterparts. Today though, advancements in technology have made the Automatic transmissions in most cars just as performance viable as manuals (and, in the case of some Ferrari/Lambo level vehicles, more efficient and race friendly than a human being can even manage). The up-tick in Automatic sales over the last many decades, based primarily on their ease of use, has also lead to an interesting phenomenon: fewer and fewer and fewer people are able to drive a stick shift, and this is a self-perpetuating trend, also, because as fewer people who can drive stick-shift exist there are fewer people with that knowledge available to teach the newer generations of automobile drivers how to handle the three-pedaled transmission. Ultimately, the Automatic transmission has killed the Manual slowly over time, and in the modern-day (where ZL1's sell more than half their vehicles in Automatic, and the base Corvette sells Automatics at a 65% tick) we live in, it looks as though we're seeing the final swan song of the stick-shift car.

Of course, and this is the hardest part of all of this for me to swallow, this isn't a bad thing. The demise of the manual means that, eventually, automobile companies wont even need to bother with the manufacturing and production of two different transmission types, and the cost of the transmission--as a component of the vehicle--will go down. Also, with the incredible advancements in technology I've seen in my lifetime, and the advent of Automatic assisted Manual transmission options--like the world-famous, Porsche derived Tiptronic and its counterparts--Automatic or Automatic Assisted Manuals (Manumatics) can actually lead to increased performance numbers. In fact, most of the world's most high-end performance cars, like the aforementioned Porsche line, utilize some form of Manumatic transmission.

Am I happy about this? No, I'm not, but I'm also a cranky old man with an extreme nostamania. Do I understand this? Absolutely.

So, what do you think? Is this shift in transmission a good thing or a bad thing? Should I, as a car enthusiast and automotive nut, lament the death of the manual transmission? Will the experience of driving, even without the involvement of the left-foot and the feel of the clutch engaging and disengaging, remain the same? What do you think? Me, I think something is lost in an Automatic, but this thinking probably has me lost in the past in the modern Automotive market.
